I don't want to make this face anymore by bobdash101 I don't want to make this face anymore by bobdash101
It seems my shading is getting a bit better, but for some reason I can't really make a picture without it looking like it was drawn in MS paint :P. Strange how it took me 2 weeks to do my last picture, but this one only took a day. Song that inspired this: [link] , from one of my favorite albums

I still can't get out of MS paint valley, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Oh yeah, another way to get line variation is to use a marker, calligraphic, or square brush (anything not round), something that has wide and thin directions as you draw.

Well, your linework has really come a long way, and that's great!
I think the MS paint look comes from using a fixed-width brush and a mouse. Your lines stay the same width from start to finish. The easiest way to fix this is to use a tablet, but I suspect you don't have one yet. Try messing around with the brush settings (I have no idea how to do that in SAI though). The pressure-sensitivity of a tablet is what helps give lines the natural look, but you can also adapt the tricks shown in this tutorial by :iconegophiliac: – basically, make them wider, then smooth the edges and ends with the eraser. Another way is to soften the brush so the edges aren't completely hard, but that gives another look entirely, so experiment and see which you like best.
Using a mouse tends to make drawing curves more difficult too, a way around that is to use whatever bezier curve/line tool SAI has (it's the pen tool in photoshop) to get more flowing, natural-looking curves.

This was drawn with the curve tool in SAI

That's what I get for not paying closer attention. I was looking at the lines inside her mane (which are just the way her mane is) and not the rest.
